Corentyne Chamber erects billboards to curb early sexual activity

The Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (UCCCI) recently installed three early sexual activity reduction billboards at strategic locations on the Corentyne. They are now adjacent to the Skeldon Line Path, Skeldon High and Tagore Memorial Secondary Schools.
This activity was accomplished with the support of the United States Agency for International Development/Governance Enhancement Project (USAID/GEP) to reduce the ever more visible phenomenon of early sexual activity with and among school- aged children.
This continues to affect and devastate many young lives in the Upper Corentyne and around the country.
The placement of the billboards is part of a wider awareness campaign that includes an essay competition in primary and secondary schools; a debating competition between secondary schools; a drama event highlighting the issue; the creation and airing of two Public Service Announcements; the production and distribution of an early sex prevention brochure; and workshops to be held with the target audience.
The schools in the Upper Corentyne which were targeted by this project were the Primary schools at Crabwood Creek, Skeldon, Corriverton, #71, #68 and #63, while the Secondary schools were Skeldon Line Path, Skeldon High, Skeldon Annexe and Tagore Memorial.
The UCCCI thanked USAID/GEP, the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL), Mr Abbas Mancey, the Region Six Education Office, the participating schools, the Corriverton Town Council, the #52-74 NDC and the local community for their support in addressing “this very serious issue.”
President of the UCCCI, Vishnu Doerga also revealed that the Chamber will be erecting 50 No- Littering signs and two large billboards shortly on the Number 63 Beach, to curb littering.
Additionally, four Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about Number 63 Beach Preservation and early sexual activity prevention will start to air on Berbice TV stations.
