Veteran Robin Persaud was again the main celebrant when the curtains came down on the 14th edition of the Troy Humphrey Memorial Cycling Meet yesterday at the Mecca of Cycling in Guyana, the Inner Circuit of the National Park.
The successful Meet witnessed by dozens of spectators was sponsored by the Humphrey’s Family, Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products of Ketley Street, Charlestown and Kurwin Chase & Family.
Persaud who also captured 6 of the 40 sprint prizes on offer, one for each lap, won the grueling contest ahead of two young riders who have been improving rapidly. Paul De Nobrega took the runner up spot along with one prime, while Linden’s Michael Anthony (2 primes) rode beautifully to claim third position.
Closing out the top ten positions were Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams (10 primes), Eric Sankar (2 primes), Orville Hinds (4 primes), Raynauth Jeffrey (8 primes), Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson, Kurt La Rose and Marlon Morrison. Hinds also received a special prize sponsored by Jude Bentley.
Jeffrey had earlier won the Junior/Juvenile 10-lap showdown with Nobrega 2nd and Raul Leal 3rd.
Eric Sankar, Marlon Morrison and Rastaff O’Selmo finished in that order in the Senior Category 1 – 4 10-lap clash.
The team time Trials which saw 4-riders representing their club was won by host club Roraima Bikers followed by Continental Cycle Club and Flying Star Cycle Club.
Junior Niles won the 5-lap Upright/Mountain Bikes clash, Jude Bentley settling for 2nd followed by Mario King.
Raymond Newton was the top Veteran Under-50 wining that race which saw Jackson following him to the line ahead of Phillip Piggott.
In the Over-50 race, Walter Isaacs crossed the line with Monty Parris and Wilfred Thom following in that order.
Results from the BMX races – 6-8 years (1 lap): Jamal Arthur, Phillip Birth, Nicholas Dhanraj.
9-11 years (2-laps): John La Rose, S. Babulall, Deeraj Garbarran.
Open (5 laps): Hamza Eastman, Jornell Harewood, Julio Melville.
Relatives of the sponsors assisted with the presentation of prizes which as cash based and very lucrative.
CEO of Humphrey’s Bakery, George Humphrey, said that he was very pleased with the turn out and level of competitiveness that was displayed in all the races stating that they family was proud to bring off another Meet in Memory of his son.
“It is always a pleasure to see the best cyclists in Guyana converging at the National Park to remember Troy who was an outstanding rider in his day.
We will continue to make our contribution to the sport in Guyana and we would like to wish the riders the best of health as they continue their respective careers including the young and promising brigade.”
The senior Humphrey also expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the Meet including the Club Executive, fans and supporters who came out in their numbers to add energy to the event.
