Half centuries for Delbert Hicks and the Hetmyer brothers
The 2011 Universal DVD Club Berbice First Division Twenty/20 Cricket Competition got going on Saturday with four of the five scheduled matches completed – the fifth between Port Mourant and Blairmont Community Centre had to be postponed due to the unavailability of both teams’ grounds.
The four matches, which were all part of two double headers, were highlighted by some outstanding batting performances headed by a brilliant century from Berbice allrounder Eugene La Fleur, a former Guyana Under-19 captain who slammed 109 (9 fours and 4 sixes) to steer his team Memorex Bermine to a challenging 179 for 6 against Edinburgh.
He featured in an opening stand of 56 in 6 Overs with his brother, Joemal La Fleur (20) who represented Guyana at the Under-19 level this year and another 77 for the 2nd wicket in 6.2 Overs with Berbice cricketer Devon Clement (18). When Edinburgh replied they were restricted to 109 in 16.3 Overs with West Indies female pacer Tremayne Smartt picking up 3 for 25 from 2.3 Overs.
Edinburgh however bounced back in their second game of the day to defeat Albion Community Centre by 69 runs thanks mainly to Riad Ali scoring 47 and taking 2 for 7 from 2.3 Overs with his offspinners Yudrunauth Seepersaud 39 and pacer Zaheer Hussain 3 for 29 from 4 Overs.
In a tense high scoring battle, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets led by 63 from former Guyana wicket-keeper batsman Delbert Hicks and 45 from Guyana Under-19 allrounder Clinton Pestano, scored 180 for 6 against Young Warriors whose veteran left arm spinner Anil Beharry picked up 4 for 42 from 3.2 Overs.
Young Warriors in replying were given a flying start by their Guyana Under-15 cricketer Shimron Hetmyer (55 – 7 fours and 3 sixes) and Guyana opening batsman Richard Ramdeen (22) they put on 79 for the 1st wicket in 8 Overs. With Hetmyer’s older brother Seon, a former Guyana Under-19 cricketer, picking up the mantle, Warriors kept themselves in the race, but found themselves needing 21 in the last over and 13 off the last two balls to win or 12 to tie but Seon Hetmyer could only manage a four and six. He ended on 55 N.O (3 fours and 3 sixes).
Young Warriors had better luck earlier in the day when they beat Police “B” Division by 7 wickets compliments firstly of their medium pacer Ameer Rahaman who took 4 for 14 from 4 Overs to restrict Police to 86 for 8 in 16 Overs and then Richard Ramdeen who hit 46 to seal the victory.
