Dear Editor,
This letter is in response to the news item “IAST to invest in training highly qualified scientists-Dr Narine,” which was carried in the Sunday, October 23, 2011 edition of the Kaieteur News.
Unfortunately, the article gave inaccurate information regarding the University of Guyana’s (UG) role in the signing of the letter of intent between Trent University of Canada and the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST) located on the Turkeyen Campus, stating that UG and Trent University signed a collaborative agreement. This is not correct.
There is no present agreement between the two Universities. In fact, the UG administration has not entered into formal discussions with Trent University. The UG presence at the event was by way of an invitation received from IAST.
The University of Guyana genuinely recognises the positive benefits that can be derived from establishing working relationships with both local and foreign institutions and is always open to engaging these bodies in ways that can be of mutual benefit.
