Senior Berbice chess player Deocharran Gobin conceded one game but rebounded to win his six remaining encounters to secure first place when the Banks DIH Malta Supreme Junior and Senior One-Day Rapid Chess Tournament concluded at the Tain Campus Sunday afternoon last. His junior counterpart, Hemchan Narain of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary school, carted off the honours in that category.
The other points standings for the seniors are: Deocharran Gobin and Steve Leung (6 apiece), John London (5) Gopaul Samaroo and Romesh Narain (4 each), Shazaad Sadiq (3½) while Denny Carpen remained in the cellar on two points.
For the juniors Guara Udit finished second on 4 ½ points, just in front of Deochan Narain and Russell Chase (3½ each).
Elizabeth Ramgolam, Simeon Singh, Marley and Darwin London were bundled together at 3 points each while Marvin
Tarachand and Sonia Singh shared the bottom of the table on two points apiece.
The astute Gobin suffered a seventh round loss to senior John London in the seventh round after the latter player gained a rook advantage and displayed sound tactics to eventually overwhelm Gobin who, with no other alternative, conceded defeat even before the end of the match.
UG student, Berbician, Steve Leung also ended on six points but was relegated to second place after the tie breaker system was employed. He had suffered an earlier loss to Gobin. John London placed third but in a kind gesture worthy of commendation, donated his prize of a tournament size chess set to seven year old junior player, Marvin Tarachand.
Meanwhile, Narain overcame stiff challenges from three senior players but lost out to two others on his way to the championship prize. Guara Udit finished second while Deochan Narain filled the final podium spot.
Banks DIH Communications Manager, Troy Peters, handed over the prizes to the respective winners and noted that once again his company has demonstrated the type of commitment necessary for the development of chess in Guyana.
He also acknowledged the strides made by the executives of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in their efforts to promote the sport countrywide. Mr. Peters reminded those present that the local beverage company had recently sponsored a similar tournament in West Demerara and was once again pleased to partner with the GCF for the Berbice competition.
