– to pay compensation
A conductor, who assaulted his driver after the latter insisted that the money he (conductor) was handing over was not the amount they had worked for during the day, was yesterday fined and ordered to pay compensation the virtual complainant.
Abdool Bennett appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to assaulting Wesley Killikelly and causing damage to property.
The facts of the case revealed that on August 27, last, the two men were working on a bus and had made a stop on Croal Street, where it was agreed that they would share their earnings for the day. Killikelly objected to the amount of money Bennett handed over, representing the day’s trips.
The court heard that Bennett became annoyed and dealt Killikelly several cuffs to the face.
During the assault, Killikelly sustained several injuries to the face and well as damage to his spectacles. The victim also told the court that his eyes were affected by particles from the spectacles.
Bennett pleaded guilty to both charges of assault and damage to property. The 23-year-old told the court that he would compensate Killikelly for his property after the complainant appeared with a receipt for a replacement.
Killikelly agreed to the offer and Bennett was ordered to pay $40,000 – the cost of the new pair of spectacles. Bennett was also fined $40,000.
