A failed attempt to rob a businessman has landed three men in the lock ups after they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. The men accused of attempting to commit an armed robbery, pleaded not guilty to the charge levied against them when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.
Patrick Smith, Lorris Mussenden and Azal Khan were all accused of attempting to take away $600,000 from Bissoendial Seepersaud. They failed, but Seepersaud was shot.
Smith who claims he’s a mechanic facing a charge of attempted break and enter, resides at 164 Albouystown and is 34 years old. Mussenden resides at 101 Grenville Park, East Coast Demerara, and Khan who said he is a hire car driver resides at Lot 149 Belwest, Canal Number 2.
The accusation against the men implied that the trio on October 14, at Perseverance, East Coast Demerara, approached Seepersaud, who the court heard left his home to conduct business. The prosecutor’s facts read that the man came to a stop when he arrived at his destination where he noticed the men armed with hand guns advancing toward him.
The information stated that an attempt was made by the men to relieve Persaud of his money and two rounds were discharged from a firearm.
According to the prosecutor the noise from the loaded weapon attracted a crowd resulting in the bandits seeking to escape the crime scene. The men were transported by two vehicles, Smith and Mussenden entered one vehicle while Khan took off in the other.
It was further revealed that Smith and Mussenden’s car was intercepted by police ranks who questioned the alleged crooks and by answers received, detained the two men. Khan was later arrested by police officers. He also appeared in court but faced the matter separately.
On behalf of Mussenden and Khan, attorney at law George Thomas told the court that Mussenden, is a taxi driver with no previous offences. He said the man was ready to lodge his passport with the police station if so desired.
The court later heard that Smith was also prepared to lodge his passport with the police pending the conclusion of the matter. Thomas said that his 48 year old client; is a father of five had no previous conviction.
He said the man was quite unaware of the matter that has been levied against him. He further indicated that his client was taken from his home and it would be fitting that the man be granted pretrial liberty.
The prosecution in an effort to keep the alleged criminals in the lock ups stated that the men are known to the police and they had previous matters pending at other courts. The prosecutor alluded to the use of weapons in the alleged attempt to rob the businessman.
They were all denied bail and are required to be back in the Magistrates’ Court to answer the matter of attempting to commit felony on October 31.
