– finds 30 kilos stashed in buckets, two arrested
Two men were arrested early Sunday morning while two of their accomplices fled after ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit made their largest drug bust in recent times.
According to reports, some 30 kilograms of cocaine were found at a koker at Number 73 Village Corentyne, Berbice, some time around midnight on Sunday.
This publication was told that acting on intelligence ranks from CANU went to the location where they saw two large buckets hidden in the bushes near to the koker.
There are reports that from all indications the items were waiting to be loaded into a boat which was close by. However when ranks showed up at the location, the boat which had two men in it immediately fled the location. Sources say another man jumped into the river and disappeared.
Up to press time yesterday the two men who were detained were still in custody assisting with investigation.
Head of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, James Singh, in an invited comment on the incident said that this bust goes to show the unit’s continuous effort to combat the drug trade. According to Singh this recent bust also goes to show how effective their intelligence gathering techniques are.
He stated that the Unit has been working and monitoring those persons for close to two weeks. He noted, too, that the Local body has been working closely with their counterparts in Suriname. Based on information, the illegal substance was headed to Suriname. Earlier this year 25 kilos were found in the Corentyne area.
Singh further stated that the Unit will continue efforts to combat the drug trade and will continue to monitor the porous borders.
