-coalition not worried about campaign finance
By Leonard Gildarie
The Justice For All Party (JFAP) has thrown its support behind the political coalition, A Partnership
Representatives of the Justice For All Party, Geoffrey Sankies and Jaipaul Sharma at the APNU press conference
For National Unity (APNU). The announcement came at the weekly APNU press conference, yesterday.
JFAP’s leader, Chandra Narine “C.N.” Sharma, however, is for the first time since his party’s formation, not running as the JFAP Presidential Candidate because of health-related issues. APNU said yesterday during a press conference at its Regent Street campaign offices, that the TV station owner has named his long time party member, Geoffrey Sankies; and accountant and son, 37-year-old Jaipaul Sharma, as JFAP’s representatives in APNU.
According to the accountant, his father asked him to represent the party. “How could I turn down my father’s wishes?”
Sharma has been dogged by persistent heart problems and several brushes with the law. His TV channel, CNS 6, was taken off the air three times over what Government said were infringements to broadcasting regulations.
According to a Declaration of Support for APNU read by executive member, Lance Carberry, JFAP decided to endorse the coalition after having discussed the “Declaration, Statement of Principles and the Unity Charter” of APNU.
“The leadership of the Justice For All Party, after full discussion with the leadership of APNU, formally announces their endorsement of the Presidential Candidate, Mr. David Granger, and the Prime Ministerial Candidate, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, for the 2011 General and Regional Elections,” Sharma said in the issued statement.
JFAP said that it believes that the vision of APNU offers all Guyanese the greatest opportunity for a better life.
“The Justice For All Party fully supports the commitment of the APNU to establish a government of National Unity and, therefore urge all our members and supporters to fully support the APNU at the forthcoming (sic) elections.”
Questioned about Sharma’s decision not to run, Carberry said that given Sharma’s past medical condition, the “rigors of campaigning” were not something the JFAP leader was ready for at this time.
APNU believes Sharma’s party is popular, picking up two seats during the 2006 national elections- one in Region 3 and another in
Region 4-and could prove crucially beneficial to the coalition for the General and Regional Elections scheduled for November 28.
It was disclosed that Sharma will remain the JFAP leader.
Hosting the meeting with Carberry were APNU’s Manager of Operations and Logistics, Amna Ally, and Campaign Director, Joe Harmon.
According to Harmon, APNU has left its “lights on” and “doors opened” for other political parties and groups to join.
Meanwhile, Linden-based Guyanese Youth Congress, a new party that came into existence back in June, also joined the coalition.
The party reportedly came out during a recent APNU rally in Linden and is said to have attracted mainly a base of young voters from that Region Ten area.
The party, led by public relations specialist Denton Osborne, said that it backed both APNU’s Presidential Candidate, David Granger, and his running mate, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine.
“We pledge to work with and in the APNU to bring about the change which is so necessary in Guyana and more particularly to the people of Region Ten.”
Yesterday, questioned about APNU’s finance, Carberry said that the coalition believes it has adequate resources to win the elections.
APNU had disclosed that it was looking at a budget of US$6M to pay for billboards, posters, T-shirts, TV and radio ads, and other logistical expenses.
APNU did not indicate whether it has adjusted that budget and by how much.
