Ramrattan/Gentle roll on
The Trophy Stall Doubles Tennis tournament started off with an action packed day of games played at the Non Pariel and Pegasus Tennis Courts.
Highlight of the day was a very close match where the third seeded team of Sandeep Chand and Andre Lopes were able to hold their nerves and pull off the win against the team of top player Jeremy Miller and Jason Glasgow.
Miller had featured in several doubles finals before with his regular partner Jason Andrews. The match started off with the teams trading service breaks to tie up at 2-2 before Miller/Glasgow pulled away to a 4-2 lead. The match turned as Chand/Lopes fought back and reeled off four straight games to take the first set 6-4.
The second set featured some entertaining tennis as both teams played well to tie the set up at 6-6 and force the tiebreak. Facing an early elimination Miller dug deep and his team took a 4-0 lead which they converted in a 7-5 win to even the match at 1 set all. A super tie-breaker to decide the game again saw both teams go neck to neck before two service winners by Chand allowed his team to eke out the set 11-9 and into the second round.
In other matches played there was a relatively easy win for the top Ladies team of Shawna Gentle/Aruna Ramrattan, who eased passed their junior counterparts Krystal Sukra/Aretta Dey 6-4 6-0. The first set was keenly contested before the winners pulled away in the second set easily. Shelly Ramdyhan teaming up with her daughter Nicola also progressed to the second round with an easy straight set win over the Boyle sisters who were participating in their first tournament and showed great heart against their much more experienced opponents.
Brothers Kris and Joe Jugdeo had an easy outing in their first round match as they outplayed Travis Ferreira/Mindat Lalbeharry 6-0 6-2 to progress to the second round, whilst the team of top juniors Gavin Lewis/Daniel Lopes had a tough battle against veterans Albert Madramootoo/Steve Longe who put up an admirable effort against their much younger opponents. Lewis and Lopes eventually won 6-3 7-6.
Another veteran team, Maxie Fox/Sakae Yamada also had a good outing before succumbing to Nicholas Fenty/Ronald Murray in straight sets 6-2 7-5, while Bishan Dalip /Kester Abrams advanced with a 6-4 6-1 win to the next round as well.
