Known as perhaps the best golfer this country has ever produced, Trinidad and Tobago-based Papo Haniff led the
field after the first day of competition in this year’s R1 Vodka Guyana Open Golf Tournament which is being played, at the Lusignan Course.
Haniff, once a household name in golf in the eighties, before he migrated showed superior class in carding a gross of 71 off a 0 handicap and a net of 71 to end the day ahead of last year’s winner Avinash Persaud, who compiled a gross of 78 playing from a 3 handicap for a net of 75, while three other players tied for the third spot.
Avinda Kishore playing off a handicap of 8 tied with Roger Rajkumar playing from an 8 handicap and Lakeram Ramsundar playing from an 11 handicap.
On the distaff side, defending champion Christine Sukhram led a field of four after finishing with a gross of 82 from a 12 handicap and a net of 70 and she is followed by Surinamese Petra Beems with a gross of 92 playing off an 18 handicap for a net 74, while Joann Deo closed with a gross of 95 off a 22 handicap and a net 73.
Over 60 players started the tournament which teed off at 06:00hrs yesterday morning that saw participation from Canada, USA, Suriname, T&T and Guyana.
Among those participating include Banks DIH Chairman Clifford Reis, William Walker, former winner of the prestigious tournament Alfred Mentore, Canada’s Andrew Claxton, USA’s Mo Shaffie and Ansa McAl’s Troy Cadogan.
The competition concludes today and over four players are in contention to add their name to the Lien Trophy and be among the prize winners.
