Guyana dominated track and field and cycling yesterday to help boost the morale of the team in Suriname at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG). Strong performances from the seasoned athletes put Guyana ahead overall in the track and field competition at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium.
Guyana leads the competition with 178 points, while Suriname follows on 165 points and French Guiana on 69 points.
The well-exposed national junior sprinter, Chavez Ageday justified the Athletics Association of Guyana’s confidence in him when he blasted his way to the100m win in 10.83 seconds while the host’s, Jeffrey Vanan and Nathaniel Jurrel were second and third in 10.97 and 11.42 seconds respectively.
Ageday then brought the curtains down on the first day of the athletics competition with a blazing final leg in the male 4x100m after he collected the baton about five metres behind the Surinamese. Ageday quickly made up the distance and held his form for a sensational finish that kept Guyana ahead in the competition.
Suriname’s CARIFTA Games 100m finalist, Danielle Clarke won the female 100m in 12.33 seconds ahead of Guyana’s Letitia Myles, who had 12.57 seconds and Suriname’s Trifena Vyent who was third in 12.95 seconds.
The 2011 junior Pan American Games finalist and South American bronze medalist, Stephan James comfortably won the 400m in 50.6 seconds with team-mate, Bevon Noble finishing second in 51.2 seconds. Suriname’s Anton Bosoe was third in 53.77 seconds.
In the female 400m race, Guyana’s most talented female junior athlete, Jevina Sampson ensured that she made an impression on the Games at just 13 years old. Sampson was sublime in her win for the country in 59.22 seconds with team-mate, Melissa Byass in second with 59.57 seconds. Sampson caught Byass on the back-straight and held her form for the win. Byass and Sampson have a rich history of competitiveness with Byass winning at the IGG trials. Suriname’s Genelva Diko was third in 1:04.56 in the race.
The bare-footed road runner, Nathaniel Giddings was third in the 1500m race in 4:23.45 with Suriname’s Clifton Betje winning the event in 4:14.58. Suriname’s Syverio Simison was second in 4:17.11 as Giddings’ team-mate, Ernesto Thomas slumped to fourth place.
However, Guyana made up in the female 1500m race when two-time CARIFTA Games gold medalist, Jevina Straker and Andrea Foster swept the top two positions. Straker won in 4:59.90 with Foster, who is the daughter of national senior sprinter Alicia Fortune, second in 5:34.51 and Suriname’s Sefania Gonsalves (6:01.28) third.
Guyana’s Parish Cadogan won the male high jump with a best height of 1.82m with Suriname’s Gayell Engeso second with 1.73m and Guyana’s Marlon Moshette third with 1.61m. Guyana’s Marcia Isaacs was third in the women’s high jump with 1.36m.
Cadogan then added another medal to his collection at the 2011 Games with his 13.82m leap for second place in the triple jump. Suriname’s Quinte Pinas won the event with 13.99m as Moshette took another bronze for the visitors in the event with 13.12m.
Guyana’s Alita Moore narrowly took the gold medal in the female triple jump with 11.14m while Suriname’s Priscilla Paitoe was second with 11.12m. French Guiana’s Larissa Galas was third in a best jump of 11.07m on day one of the two-day competition.
Troy Lewis threw the javelin 61.25m to give Guyana more points on what can be considered one of the best days of the competition for the country. Michael Bowman was second with 53.57m as Suriname’s Gillermo Bijeren finished third with 52.30m.
Michael’s sister, Lisa Bowman threw 32.79m to win the female javelin. Suriname’s Charissa Douglas and Vanessa Plak were second and third respectively with 29.41m and 28.96m respectively. The IGG track and field competition continues today.
Cycling
Guyana’s male cycling team that includes Paul DeNobreiga, Neil Reece, Raynauth Jeffrey and Michael Anthony stormed to the team time-trials cycling win yesterday on a 10km course. The young national cyclists easily dismissed any challenge for their rivals.
The female team that includes Naomi Singh and Marica Dick placed second behind Suriname. The 40km road race is scheduled for today where cycle coaches Hassan Mohamed and Randolph Roberts has expressed confidence that Guyana will come out on top.
Chess
In chess, Guyana lost is opening game to 0-2 to Suriname and drew 1-1 against French Guiana. The outcome of the Suriname and French Guiana game will determine how Guyana places in the competition. The game was played last evening.
Volleyball
Suriname’s female team defeated Guyana 25-10, 25-19 and 25-9 in the first volleyball game of the IGG competition. Up to press time last night, Guyana’s males were expected to play Suriname in their first game of the 2011 event.
