The Military Intelligence arm of the Guyana Defence Force is questioning several ranks, including three seniors, following the disappearance of several grenades at the army’s training base at Tacama, in the Berbice River area.
The discovery was made yesterday morning following the completion of a training exercise.
However, according to reports, seven hours later, investigators were able to recover two boxes containing 42 grenades, which were stashed behind the base’s administrative quarters called the White House.
Several more still remain unaccounted for, according to reports.
Kaieteur News understands that a captain, a lieutenant and a warrant officer are among those being questioned by the army’s G-2 branch at Tacama before they are brought to the city for further grilling.
The incident occurred at a time when Guyana is preparing to hold General Elections in a month’s time.
In February 2003, the army lost 33 AK-47 assault rifles from its headquarters, Base Camp Ayanganna, in the midst of an unprecedented crime wave that almost brought Guyana to a standstill.
While some of these weapons remain at large, the security forces have been able to recover most of them from the grasps of criminals.
