If the standard of the batting on the slow Guyana pitches is already a worry the consistent
adverse weather here is even more depressing as both second round Zone ‘A’ matches in the Regional Super50 cricket tournament were washed out without a ball being bowled yesterday, virtually pushing Guyana into the semi-finals.
Guyana, who recovered from an ordinary batting display to beat the Windward Islands in their opening match on Wednesday, maintained their lead on the points table with eight points from two matches after they collected two points from their second round match against Sagicor HPC which ended in a no result at Providence yesterday.
The only zone ‘A’ team with a victory, Guyana, who last won the title in 2005 in Guyana, should to advance to the Day/Night semi-finals even if they lose to Barbados in their final preliminary round match at Blairmont tomorrow.
Although 14:17hrs is the latest a game can commence, yesterday’s match at Providence was called off at 13:30hrs since at that time it was still raining and the time needed to remove the covers and get the match started would have exceeded the 47 minutes before the cut off time.
The Windwards and Barbados also both collected two points from their washed out match yesterday at Everest leaving the Windwards at the bottom of the points table on two points going into their final match in the zone against HPC tomorrow at Everest.
The Sagicor HPC now have four no-results in five matches at this level after suffering their only loss in a close three-run defeat against Guyana in their debut tournament in Jamaica last year and will hope for improved weather to try and squeeze into the semis.
Both HPC and Barbados are on four points from three no-results and massive victories from both teams tomorrow with the maximum
four bonus points will guarantee them both semi-final spots, edging out Guyana.
If Barbados and HPC both win tomorrow but without bonus points, they will both be level with Guyana on eight points and the two teams with the better run rates in zone ‘A’ will advance to the ‘final four’ at Providence.
A team gets four points for a win and two bonus points for bowling out the opposition for less than 150 if they win the game and another two bonus points from scoring at six runs per over in their innings; giving them a maximum eight points from a match.
Jamaica collected a maximum eight points from their emphatic win against the Leewards in their opening match while CCC upset Trinidad and Tobago in their first round clash to claim four points.
Today Jamaica and CCC face-off at Everest while the Leewards and T&T do battle at Providence in their zone ‘B’ second round matches.
Guyana Captain Assad Fudadin and Guyanese off-spinner Steven Jacobs leads the run scorers and wicket-takers respectively in zone ‘A’ but prospects of much more action in the tournament is not too good since scattered thunderstorms on Guyana’s coastlands are forecast for the next five days.
