Republic Bank/BCB U-17 Inter Zone final
A magnificent innings of 75 not out by Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club member Arif Chan and his club mate Shailendra Shameer who blasted 52 led Lower Corentyne to an easy 81 run win over West Berbice at the Area ‘H’ Ground in the final of the Republic Bank (Guyana) Ltd/Berbice Cricket Board Under-17 Inter Zone tournament.
They were well supported by their captain Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai of Albion who bowled well capturing 4 for 15 off eight overs.
Batting first after the match was reduced to 40 overs due to overnight and early morning rain, Lower Corentyne were given a 28 run opening stand between Nicholas Cameron and Madan Budhram before Budhram was caught behind off pacer Grisean Grant.
It soon became 39 for 2 when Rohan Harripersaud was bowled by Grant for 4. Cameron and National Under-15 batsman Arif Chan then added 44 for the 3rd wicket before left arm spinner Parmanand Ramdhan had Cameron caught at mid wicket for a patient 25 (3×4).
Chan was joined by his Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Shailendra Shameer and together they added 110 for the 4th wicket with Shameer taking the attack to the bowlers for a well played 52 (6×4 2×6) off 41 balls.
National Under-15 player Sharaz Ramcharran 13 not out, batted out the last few overs with the highly impressive Chan who ended on 78* (9×4); Lower Corentyne finishing on 221 for 4 from their allotted 40 overs. Pacer Grisean Grant 3 for 31 and Ramdhan 1 for 52 were the wicket takers for West Berbice.
In reply West Berbice were given a solid opening partnership of 50 between Nick Ramsaroop and Andrew Sewkarran before left arm spinner Motie bowled Sewkarran in the 12th over.
West Berbice suffered a telling blow when their star batsman and Captain Quacy McPherson was stumped by Nicholas Cameron off Motie for nought in the same over.
Ramsaroop 37 (5×4) and Brian Nurse (3×6 5×4) were the batsmen to offer resistance to the Lower Corentyne bowlers who were led by Motie – bowling figures of 8-3-15-4; Shameer 8-1-40-2 and Ramcharran 8-1-12-2.
Meanwhile at the Port Mourant Ground, New Amsterdam/Canje crushed Upper Corentyne by 9 wickets to claim 3rd place in the tournament.
Batting first Upper Corentyne was bundled for a meager 62 in 30.1 overs with pacer Nial Smith 4 for 15, Suresh Dhanai 2 for 2 and Wagar McKenzie 2 for 10. In reply New Amsterdam/Canje sped to 64 for 1 with Shimron Hetmyer blasting 52 not out (1×6 9×4).
PRO of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony involving all four teams and Republic Bank Staffers said the tournament was great success with all the matches producing a high level of play.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of the Bank for their continued investment in Berbice cricket.
Hailing Republic Bank as a true friend of the sport in the Ancient County, Foster stated that it was such relationships which has enabled Berbice to remain as the pace setter; urging the Bank to continue its investment in the future.
Commercial Loan Officer Mahendra Ramnauth who spoke on behalf of the sponsor congratulated the BCB for organising a top class tournament and noted that the Bank was proud to be associated with the Board.
Republic Bank as a responsible corporate business strongly believes in the development of education and sports and he urged the 55 cricketers present to always be discipline and focus. The winning team took home $50,000 and a trophy, the runner-up $40,000 while the 3rd place side collected $30,000 and 4th place was rewarded with $20,000.
The man-of-the-final Arif Chan received a trophy along with a pair of Nike boots, a similar prize was given to Motie for the highest individual score.
