A high level team from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday provided an update on the Election readiness of the entity and reminded that there is in excess of 30,000 Identification Cards still to be collected.
Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally and Chief Elections Officer Gocool Boodhoo were among the officials at the briefing, where it was reiterated that any Identification Cards issued before October 2009 will be decommissioned on Tuesday November 1, 2011.
It was emphasized that none of the decommissioned ID cards will be allowed for voting purposes.
The GECOM officials also informed that the hard-copy prints of the Official List of Electors (OLE) are already being printed, utilizing a reputable company that has been used in previous elections.
This costly exercise, according to Dr Surujbally, is all aimed at ensuring accountability, and as such, the printing is being done on specially designed water-marked paper which is procured from a highly regarded overseas supplier.
According to Dr Surujbally, persons who are eligible to vote, registered and did not uplift their ID Cards, have until three days before Election Day to uplift their document.
He pointed out, too, that GECOM is in the process of procuring sensitive election materials, such as Ballot Paper, Statements of Poll Forms, Tally Sheets and indelible ink from the same “reliable overseas supplier which has over the decades supplied GECOM with sensitive election materials.”
Dr Surujbally expressed optimism that all of the required materials will be in GECOM’s possession well ahead of Election Day to allow for the logistical arrangements to be put in place for the smooth conduct of the Elections in all of the 10 Electoral Districts.
It was announced also that the first to head to the polls will be members of the Disciplined Services (Police/Army/Prison Officers), who will vote one week before the nation on Monday November 21.
Dr Surujbally also reported to media operatives that the Logistics Division of the Secretariat of GECOM has proposed a list of 2075 Polling Stations to be established at 991 Polling Places in all of the 10 Electoral Districts across Guyana to facilitate voting.
Meanwhile it was revealed that GECOM has been in close contact with stakeholders pertaining to the General Election and indicated that some 32 parties have expressed an interest in contesting.
The Chairman said that given the record from over the years by Nomination Day that number is expected to dwindle to about 10.
According to Dr Surujbally, in keeping with its deliberate open door policy of being responsive and accommodative to Political Parties, GECOM has been meeting with Political Parties to, among other issues, treat with concerns which the Parties wanted addressed, and provide, upon request, guidance regarding the filling out of the Nomination Forms.
To date GECOM has met with representatives of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic, A Partnership for National Unity, Alliance For Change, Vision Guyana, Unity Party, The United Force, Fundamental Structure Group, and Guyana United Muslim Party.
