Dear Editor,
The combined forces of the Office of the President and Freedom House, a witch’s brew of unrelenting attacks on the private media, continue to seek traction for their private-media bewitching scheme, this time in the person of Prem Misir whose latest harangue (KN Oct. 17, 2011; “Yellow journalism is part of the architecture of the media in Guyana”) attempts to further bedevil the private media.
Someone told me that the author of that piece is a doctor. I don’t know the man personally but I wonder what kind of doctor he is. Is he a medical doctor, an academic doctor or a witch doctor? Judging from the tone of his many outpourings in this section of the media, I will bet on the latter.
This character regularly concocts iniquitous vials of malice not only accusing the private media of yellow journalism but also conjuring up fables of them acting as conduits of racial provocation and signaling instruments of genocide.
By so doing he sets the stage to offer a justification for the political campaign machinery in Freedom House and Office of the President to attack and subsequently dismantle certain private media establishments.
What is laughable is that this man, obviously spooked by his own witch hunting, claims that the private media is seeking political office.
This latest ranting exposes a kind of mental and intellectual bankruptcy, among his numerous acrimonious media outpourings, he has not once cited a concrete example of how the Guyanese private media practices yellow journalism. Until he does that, whatever he writes remains a bogey to be avoided by all who desire to embrace uprightness and decency.
Based on GECOM Media Monitoring Unit’s last report, using “balance, accuracy, fairness and equity” as its yardstick, the government-operated media establishments practiced below the standards of journalistic professionalism. This fact completely escapes the attention of the doctor.
Yet he continues to regurgitate spooky scientific analysis to justify an attempt to vanquish the legitimate private media. No wonder why the use of ghostwriters is a main propaganda tool of the political machinery of the ruling class.
The attack on the media by Misir (and his employer) contains greater racially inflammatory material than is found anywhere in the legitimate private media and these attacks should not go unanswered or we run the risk of allowing mischief to flourish unchallenged thus sinking Guyana lower into dense darkness.
