Luke Latiff, a man claiming to be a mechanic was remanded to jail yesterday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. Latiff is accused of attempting to kill a fellow inmate at the East La Penitence night shelter where he stayed.
The charge states that on October 9 he attempted to kill Andrew Anthony.
According to the facts of the prosecution, Latiff and Anthony both stayed at the night shelter located in East La Penitence. On October 9, while Anthony was preparing to go to work he spoke to the defendant who was smoking at the time. The court heard that an argument ensued between the men after the conversation where the defendant became angry resulting in him whipping out a knife and stabbing the virtual complainant several times to the chest. The man subsequently became unconscious. The police were contacted and the defendant was apprehended.
The court was told that Anthony is still hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Latiff, who the court heard had no particular place of abode, was remanded to prison and is scheduled to return to court on October 28.
