– 22 more for court
The City Constabulary, the law enforcement arm of the Mayor and City Council, recently arrested and charged 42 persons for littering the streets of Georgetown within the period October 5 to October 17.
Thus far, 20 persons were prosecuted and paid a total of $162,500 in fines to the State. The remaining 22 persons are expected to appear in Court between this Friday and next week Tuesday for prosecution.
This is according to the Chief Constable (ag), Trevor Merriman, during a press briefing yesterday at City Hall. He emphasised that the prosecution of these ‘litter bugs’ is as a result of an intense campaign by the Council to clean up the City.
Merriman mentioned that the cash-strapped Council is spending too much money to clear bottles and Styrofoam containers from canals and on the streets in Georgetown. This could be reduced if persons dispose their waste in receptacles.
Accepting the fact that there are inadequate numbers of receptacles around the City, Merriman stressed that that should not be a reason for littering.
“Citizens should make it their civic responsibility to keep their waste until they have access to receptacles.”
To effectively execute the campaign, ranks from the Constabulary are dressed in civilian clothing, blending in with the general public and are observing those who litter the environment. They are stationed at the prime litter locations such as Regent Street, Water Street, Stabroek, Lacytown, and the Square of the Revolution.
Merriman related that most of the persons who were arrested for littering were acting on behalf of some business entities, most of which operate late at nights. The Chief Constable advised that business entities should utilise the Council’s scheduled time between 14:00hrs and 16:00 hrs for collecting garbage within the commercial zone.
Merriman suggested that there should be a robust public awareness campaign informing citizens of the serious public health concerns attached to the indiscriminate dumping of garbage. He pointed out that oftentimes the Council is unable to pay to collect garbage timely and citizens should take that into consideration before littering.
