Dear Editor,
I do believe that Dr. Emmanuel Cummings made some very good points when he asserted that “Afro-Guyanese should vote for PPP”.
1. “The PPP is the only true national party in Guyana and is both the “father and mother” of the others political groups.”
This is a quite astounding statement. I must say that I agree with the good doctor. Guyanese of all races are behind the PPP. Gone are the days when Afro-Guyanese complain of discrimination.
The Government took all concerns of discrimination seriously and investigated such claims thoroughly. Gone are the days when nepotism and political connection determine who are provided with opportunities.
Gone are the days when University of Guyana medical students cried foul in their final examinations while those with political connections were provided with exceptional grades.
This is because the PPP is the only national party.
2. “From the inception the PPP was a multiracial party and it has always been a multiracial party; there is no other political party in this country that can say that they are a multiracial party.”
This is quite a true statement. The evidence is there for all to see. Look at our ambassadors, their ethnic makeup is as diverse as the Guyanese population. No one can argue that they are predominantly of Indo-Guyanese origin. Look at our state-of-the-art University. No one can argue that the board of directors and management is predominantly Indo-Guyanese. Look at our Government ministers, look at who gets the government contracts, look at how the Afro-Guyanese communities are striving (Linden a prime example) , look at the GINA website, etc. The PPP regime has always had its political doors open to Afro-Guyanese. No one can argue that Dr. Cummings is being used as a political tool to garner black votes since the PPP now see their Indian base being eroded by the resurgence of AFC and APNU.
3. The PPP Government of the past 19 years has made great accomplishments in the social sector, particularly in education. Our University is state-of-the-art, comparable to any University in the Western world. Research and academic brilliance is beyond reproach. The Government continues to invest in education. Gone are the days when students had to go to ‘bottom house lessons’ to make up for absent teachers in the public schools. Our schools’ infrastructure is modern with the latest technology and abundance of human resources.
Gone are the days when teachers migrated to greener pastures. All these achievements are down to the great governance of the PPP regime over the past 19 years – taking Guyana from the education mediocrity to academic excellence.
The honourable doctor was granted a scholarship by the PPP regime to study veterinary medicine in Cuba. This is a reflection of the regime’s investment in education during the 1980s when the PNC was banning flour left, right and centre.
In closing I will state that Dr. Cummings has earned my outmost respect and I can assure you that with Guyana on the ‘up and up’ under this Government and with all the great development in Afro-Guyanese communities, their vote for the PPP is all but guaranteed.
Dr. Mark Devonish
