Half centuries from Nokta Moses and Nigel Coggins highlighted the opening round of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee / Thakur Lokram twenty/20 cricket competition which commenced last Sunday with three matches.
At 10:00am at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground, Sans Souci Jaguars defeated Sans Souci by 4 wickets. Sans Souci batted first and managed 121-4 after the game was reduced to 15 overs due to rain.
Varounie Sasepaul who was dropped at first slip in the second over bowled by pacer Zaheer Mohamed before he had scored led with 37 (1×6, 2×4), while Essequibo u-19 player Seon Venture, who was also given a life off Mohamed when on 10, supported with 35 (1×6, 3×4), and Vickram Ramnarine, who hit three sixes in the final over, chipped in with 23.
The Jaguars who began their reply cautiously eventually won the game in 14.4 overs. Nokta Moses a former Essequibo u-15 player hit five fours and two sixes in a top score of 57 as Venture picked up 3-11 and Ramnarine 2-10.
At 2:00pm at the said venue, Good Success made light work of Zeelandia winning by 8 wickets. National u-19 player Ricardo Adams was the only batsman that offered any resistance with 23 (1×4,2×6) before he was comprehensively bowled by off spinner Nazeer Mohamed as Zeelandia were skittled out for 67 in 14 overs.
Imran Khan 3-7, Lokram Narine 3-15 and Mohamed 2-10 were the main wreckers for Good Success who reached their target for the loss of 2 wickets ending on 68 in 6 overs.
Opener Shoaib Namaz was their leading run getter with 40 (3×6, 3×4). The game was reduced to 15 overs.
At Maria’s Pleasure at 10:00am, Noitgedacht overcame the host by 44 runs. Left-handed opener Nigel Coggins slammed three sixes and four fours in a top score of 72 and got support from former national u-15 player Neil Ramalho 48 (2×6, 3×4) and Dillon Retemiah 24 as the visitors piled up 206-7 off their allotment of 20 overs.
Pacer Bernard Lewis captured 3-32 and Kennard Lewis 2-29. Maria’s Pleasure in their turn at the crease threatened somewhat before they were bowled out for 162 in 19.5 overs.
Bernard Lewis led with 45 and Kennard Lewis assisted with 29 as Retemiah and Deonarine Persaud grabbed three wickets each for the winners.
The competition continues tomorrow with the Jaguars travelling to Maria’s Pleasure, Noitgedacht facing Good Success and Sans Souci doing battle with Zeelandia. Both matches and slated for the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground.
