The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), in its effort to promote table tennis and to create the framework for the development of the sport, will host its annual Inter-Organisation Tournament during October 26-30 at the National Gymnasium.
The tournament that attracts ministries, agencies, business entities, corporations and associations will conclude with the Singles contest where all eligible players will be encouraged to participate in what will be an open event to decide the best individual players.
The Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) sponsored last year’s Inter-Organisation contest that Kashif and Shanghai won. The
Guyana Fire Service was second while the Police Officer’s Mess and NP Electronics finished joint third. The GBTI is earmarked as this year’s sponsors and the GTTA anticipates record participation in the event.
The GTTA President, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene said in a release that he anticipates record participation of organisations in this year’s tournament. He informed that the GTTA will coordinate competition fixtures and will provide umpires, tables, balls among other resources to ensure the smooth running of annual competition.
The Tournament will be conducted on a round-robin basis, with the top four teams in each of the divisions contesting the semi-finals. The organisations will be competing for various prizes in the form of trophies and medals in the respective team and individual events.
The GTTA General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe stated that the Inter-Organisation Tournament is aimed at achieving the following objectives: (a) Fostering camaraderie amongst staff members; (b) Developing partnerships among the various organisations and sectors; (c) Promotion/Creation of healthy lifestyles through sport; (d) Provision of an environment for recreational activity and (e) Spreading the association’s base by having more persons actively participate in table tennis activities both recreationally and competitively, with the intention of formulating a league in the future.
Organisations interested in participating in the tournament, and for further details, are asked to contact the GTTA Tournament and Fixture Committee Members, Munroe on telephone numbers 686-7473 on Linden Johnson on 621-7630 and 223-3468.
