With the move to the New In-Patient Facility scheduled for tomorrow, commencing with the patients of the Female Medical Ward, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has made some adjustments to its rules and visitation hours for friends and family of its patients.
According to the GPHC, relatives would not be permitted to take any food (or drinks) into the ward. There is also a strict two-relative per patient (at any one time) rule.
Children below the age of 12 will not be permitted on the wards.
As of October 17, the visiting hours for all non-specialized or open wards, including the New In-Patient Facility will be as listed below.
From Mondays to Fridays, 06:00h to 06:30h, 12:00h to 12:30h and 16:00h to 17:00h (4 to 5pm) and on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays visitation will be allowed from 11:00h to 17:00h (5pm)
Works on the New In-Patient Facility commenced last year with a budgetary allocation of $716M for the first phase. Earlier this year, an additional $235M was budgeted for its completion.
This spanking new facility, which is located on Lamaha Street, between East and Thomas Streets, will accommodate approximately 300 inpatients.
The Male and Female Wards among others are to be housed in this building and patients would enjoy a more comfortable environment, which is conducive for their treatment and recovery.
Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan, had previously explained that each bed in the new facility would be equipped with modern centralized monitoring devices such as gas masks and heart and blood pressure monitors.
This newspaper was also told that some 65 doctors have already been identified to staff the new wing.
It is also expected that this facility will significantly ease the situation of overcrowding at the current location since there have been numerous instances of patients having to share beds in congested surroundings.
Meanwhile, a section of the hospital which is currently housing male patients will be dismantled. The construction of the In-Patient Facility was undertaken by R. Bassoo and Sons Construction Company. (Kristen Macklingam)
