The European Union, while not fielding an official observer mission to Guyana for the November 28 polls, will be ‘watching’ the process, outgoing Ambassador Geert Heikens said yesterday.
Heikens said that the decision largely rests on the fact that the last elections were peaceful, leaning on earlier comments that it was an indication that the Guyanese people have matured.
Nevertheless, he told reporters at a farewell media briefing that the EU will play a ‘watch role’ to determine whether the elections are free, peaceful and fair.
So far, the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of American States have accepted the government’s invitation to field observer missions for the elections.
