-discussions to have heavy emphasis on youth issues
CONECAR 2011 opens Monday evening at the Ocean View International Hotel at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, with the theme ‘The Church: Its missing dimension’.
Conecar, the Congress of Evangelicals in the Caribbean, connects the territories of the Caribbean Region, from all the language groups and evangelical denominations and agencies, and provides the forum to engender growth and future development in the Caribbean Church.
Delegates will be there from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Aruba, Suriname, the United States, England and France.
Local churches involved in the conference include the Assemblies of God, the Seventh Day Adventists, the Salvation Army, the Full Gospel Fellowship, Christian Mission, and representatives of the Inter-School Christian Fellowship.
Rev. John Smith, Chairman of the Evangelical Association of the Caribbean, and Chairman of the Host Committee for Conecar 2011, describes the event as a space for discussing things Caribbean, vis-à-vis the Church.
The ceremonial opening will commence with a parade of flags of participating countries, and will be chaired by Rev. Emerson Boyce.
Sessions at Conecar 2011 will deal primarily with youth issues, including HIV and empowerment.
Besides topics dealing with the Church and discipleship, such as reaching and discipling hurting people and growing mature, Christians, tutorials and electives will look at building life skills, sexual practices of youth attending evangelical churches, practical issues confronting people of influence, global economic trends and implications for the Caribbean Church, reaching the next generation through the sports ministry and evangelicals, politics and justice in the Caribbean.
Speakers include Jamaica Senator Joan Purcell, Rev. Dr. Alister Alexander, Bishop John Cummings, Dr. Israel Brito, Rev. Dr. John Smith, Bishop Gerry Seale, Dr. Nicole Francis, Dr. Raymond Boca, Eworth Williams, Dr. Clifton Charles and Rev. Adolph Davis.
Conecar 2011 concludes on Thursday evening with an open plenary session at Central Assembly of God Church on Church and East Streets in the city.
Open plenary sessions will also be held at Central Assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Conecar is held every two years. Conecar 2012 is scheduled for St. Kitts.
