Young Warriors defeated Rebels by 7 wickets to win the final of the Phyllis Carter memorial T/20 cricket competition played recently in Leguan. At Enterprise ground, Rebels batted first in front of a fair size crowd lost early wickets before Jainarine Nandram steadied the ship with 31 but his team’s total of 76 all out in 19.2 overs later proved to be less than challenging as Curtis Carter claimed 4-10 and medium pacer Tyrone Narine 3-14. Young Warriors, who drew the bye to the final, then responded with 77-3 in 16 overs. Man-of-the-match Muneshwar Jattan top scored with 51. Young Warriors received the winning trophy and Rebels took the runner up prize. Sultan Ali received a medal for scoring the most fifties in the competition while Fizul Mohamed collected a trophy for hitting four sixes in the opening game of the tournament.
Meanwhile in the lone semifinal played, Rebels got the better of Blenheim by 24 runs. Scores: Rebels 176-4 in 20 overs (Sultan Ali 56, Kevin Gordon 2-24). Blenheim 152 all out in 19.4 overs. (Huckumchand Savitir 39, Shazaad Razack 30, Kevin Gordon 24, Brian Roopchand 3-21, Raymond Nandram 2-20).
At the presentation ceremony, vice chairman of the Leguan Cricket Committee, Jainarine Nandram thanked the sponsor and congratulated both teams for their efforts. Terry Lander Carter thanked the Leguan Cricket Committee and said he will continue to support the game on the island promising a bigger and better competition in the future. (Zaheer Mohamed)
