The first ever RAF’s Variety Store sponsored Inter Jamaat Ten10 softball cricket tournament organised by Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) in memory of Hajjin Zeleen Rafeek is set to conclude tomorrow (Saturday) at the MYO Ground, Woolford Avenue under lights.
This six-week tournament attracted a total of 46 Masjids from around Guyana and now it si down to the final four.
Coming from the County of Essequibo is a strong team with great team spirit, the Adventure/JC Masjid. This team made the highest score in the tournament so far and no team has threatened to challenge them. Leading their charge for championship glory is Br. Muneer Amin who has hit the highest individual score of the tournament so far, 118 against Anna Regina.
Representing the West Side is the Corneila Ida boys who can spring an upset since they boast a balanced team in both the batting and bowling departments. This semi final between these two teams will be one to watch for as two very good sides compete for a place in the final.
The second semi finalist will see the boys from the East Coast, Enmore Eatate Masjid challenging MYO. Enmore is made up of a few good players and will be harboring thoughts of creating an upset and they will be led in the batting by Asif Mohamed.
The favorites, MYO will be spearheaded by their experienced skipper Khalid Haslim (Bilal); some other explosive batsmen are also in the mix including Guyana National player Waslim Haslim who will be looking to give his team a good start with Zulfikar Ali.
Shaheed Gittens who has back to back fifties so far and the power hitter Richard Latiff are also players to watch. Their bowling will be led by the experienced on Timur Mohamed and Shaheed Gittens. The respective semi final winners will clash in the final.
After the final the presentation ceremony will take place with attractive cash and other prizes on offer by sponsor Br. Rafeek who will be on hand along with members of the organisers, MYO to help distribute.
Also expected to join is the President of the Georgetown Cricket Association Mr. Roger Harper who is set to adjudicate the Man-of-the-Match in the final.
Tomorrow’s activity will be a historic moment for the MYO as this is the first time they will be having the biggest countrywide softball tournament concluding under lights. The first semi final will commence at 15:00hrs.
