Regional Super50 preparations
By Sean Devers
The Digicel sponsored Guyana cricket team won its final practice match at DCC yesterday and will have a practice session today at the Guyana National Stadium as preparations continue for this year’s Regional Super50 cricket competition in Guyana from October 19-29.
Guyana face the Windward Islands at the Stadium in their opening zone ‘A’ game on Wednesday and yesterday Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, who will undergo a fitness Test today to determine his place in the Guyana team, looked good in his 78-ball 68 which was decorated with five fours and three sixes.
This was Sarwan’s first match since his withdrawal from the West Indies ODI team to Bangladesh due to a back injury and if he fails today’s fitness test his place in the 14-member squad will be taken by Test player Travis Dowlin.
Sewnarine Chattergoon, who was struck while fielding in the second practice match on the same shin on which he suffered a hairline fracture, was cleared to play by doctors and is expected to practice with the team today while West Indies Under-19 players Amir Khan and Ronsford Beaton, who returned from India on Wednesday morning, both played in yesterday’s practice game.
The entire Guyana team will begin their Hotel encampment from Sunday for the duration of the tournament after the out-of-town players were accommodated at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI for the practice and training sessions since the squad was selected.
Yesterday Trevon Griffith continued his good form with a 50-ball 59 and shared in a 105-run opening partnership with Skipper Assad Fudadin who hit seven fours and two sixes in 80 from 88 balls as the National side reached 272-4 off 43 overs replying to the 269-6 off 50 overs made by the Rest team.
After Griffith was caught and bowled by Deon Ferrier, Leon Johnson (3) was taken at point off Pacer Keon Joseph and Dowlin (20) was bowled by Kellon Carmichael before Fudadin was caught at long-on going after leg-spinner Shawn Perreira at 185-4.
Royston Crandon (36) who ended the match with a huge six off left-arm spinner Anthony Adams added 87 in an unfinished fifth wicket stand with Jonathon Foo (34).
Earlier, Norman Fredericks continued his good form with an 81-ball 62 with eight fours and two sixes and put together 75 for the first wicket with Shemroy Barrington (37) before Barrington was run out.
Waslim Haslim made 29 before he was bowled by Crandon while Sarwan entertained a fair size crowd with attractive stroke-play including an effortless straight six off Chris Barnwell who eventually had him brilliantly taken by Griffith at long-off.
Barnwell, who had 3-60 from eight overs, also removed Vishal Singh (18) and National Under-19 player Chanderpaul Hemraj (12) while Beaton had none for 24 from three overs and Khan none for 18 from two.
Preparations for the competition continue today when defending joint champions Leewards Islands face the Windwards at DCC in a practice match.
The Windwards will then play a Georgetown combination in another practice game at DCC tomorrow before opposing the Leewards in their final practice game at the same venue on Monday.
Guyana are grouped with defending joint champions Barbados, Sagicor HPC and the Windwards while Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, CCC and the Leewards are the teams in zone ‘B’ of the eight-team competition.
