Group files injunction to block elections

The Guyana National Council on Public Policy (GNCPP) has filed a writ to restrain the Guyana Elections Commission from holding General Elections until it can demonstrate that political parties are given equal opportunity in the media to express their policies, without being subject to the dictates of any political party.
Chief Justice Ian Chang has since ruled that the writ can be served on all the defendants.
The writ, which also named the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and nine other political parties as defendants, also seeks to restrain the Commission from holding elections until it “conducts its constitutional fiduciary duties, obligations and responsibilities in accordance with those established under the Constitution and other acts of parliament.”
In addition, the GNCPP also filed an order directing all political parties not to stand for elections or re-elections until there is adequate assurance to the “one national electorate”, who is demanding that mechanisms be provided that assure the most free and ample participation of the citizens, by way of a referendum and elections that they would not continue to be in dereliction of their constitutional fiduciary duties, obligations and responsibilities.
The nine other political parties named as defendants in the writ are the People’s National Congress Reform, The United Force (TUF) and Alliance for Change, the Guyana Action Party/ Rise Organise and Rebuild, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the Justice For All Party, and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).
Aside from the Guyana National Council on Public Policy, the writ identified seven other plaintiffs, namely, the Guyana Trades Union Congress; An Interfaith Group of Concerned Religious Elders; Dr. Philip H Mozart Thomas;  Andries Atkinson; Maureen Williams; Mohamed Sadiq and Juste Ramdas.
