Despite drawing with the Hikers for the second time in as many matches, GCC men’s first division hockey
team secured another Farfan & Mendes League victory, playing unbeaten throughout the tournament.
The final clash against the Hikers saw the Bourda side take control early in the match with a dominant possession game that pressed mostly into the Hikers half of the field.
While, GCC enjoyed the greater percentage of control, however, the youthful strikers for the Hikers narrowly missed two early counterattacking chances that were met by competent goalkeeping from GCC’s Michael Xavier.
In the 18th minute of the match, Shaka Gill completed a smoothly executed buildup by GCC on the right wing as he latched onto the cross to beat Hikers custodian Jason Hoyte.
The goal seemed to boost GCC’s confidence as they strengthened control of the match going into the half despite being unable to create a second goal.
The determination of the Hikers began to make an impact on the game from the outset of the second half.
As GCC seemed to rest on their heels, the youthful Hikers picked up the pace of the game and began to turn the tide of the match.
Midfielders Randy Hope and Shaquille Assanah were particularly productive with the ball in creating several threatening attacks, while defensive stalwart Robert Fernandes seemed to crush every GCC effort.
A long aerial pass by left back Brian Asregado managed to beat the GCC deep defence in the 56th minute and although goalkeeper Michael Xavier rejected the first Hikers shot, the speedy Robert France made good on the rebound to draw the game even.
The game heated up as both team pressed for the win in the remaining 14 minutes, but the final whistle met the teams still deadlocked at 1-1.
The result meant that GCC topped the two rounds with 14 points which was enough for them to recapture the coveted Farfan & Mendes First Division League trophy.
While the tournament in 2010 was incomplete, the Hikers were the most recent champs in 2009.
