Deosarran’s 59 see Lusignan to Rockaway E/Coast t20 title
By Sean Devers
Attacking left-hander Krishna Deosarran thumped an attractive 59 last Saturday to lead home team Lusignan ‘A’ to a 35-run victory against Better Hope in the final of the East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) Rockaway Auto Sales premier league t20 cricket competition.
Deosarran got support from Harrinarine Hera who made an unbeaten 39 and Vishnu Ramjeet who stroked an entertaining 38 as Lusignan reached 207-5 off their allotted 20 overs in sunny conditions after they had elected to bat first on a slow pitch.
Ravi Singh (1-32 off 4 overs) and Emran Khan (1-39 off 4 overs) were the best bowlers for Better Hope who were limited to 172-6 when their overs expired despite 45 from Ravi Singh and 31 from Chris Deonarine.
A large and vocal crowd watched as Chitram Gangadin was hammered for 48 from his four overs but he took three important wickets while Narvan Singh (3-31 off 4 overs) was also among the wickets for the champions.

Three other finals in competitions sponsored by Rockaway Auto Sales were played on a busy weekend for cricket on the East Coast and ECCB President and former Guyana Cricket Board Vice-President Bissoon Singh told the gathering at the presentation ceremony that Rockaway is one of the business entities that continue to play an important role in the development of cricket on the East Coast.
Singh was also high in praise for the officials of the ECCB and the media for their hard working in ensuring that the competition was ‘professionally organised and well covered’, while Mr Hafeez, the proprietor of Rockaway Auto Sales, was also present.
In the Super League t20 final, Fairfield crushed Helena 1 & 2 by 10 wickets in a one-sided contest which commenced at 10:00hrs in the opening match on Saturday.
Helena won toss and elected to bat and were soon regretting that decision as they crashed to 49 all out in 17.3 overs with S. Nickels (12) being the only batsmen to reach double figures.
Leslie Tulsidas took 3-8 off 4 overs for Fairfield who raced to 50 without loss off 9.3 overs as Shawn Hussain led the way with an unbeaten 32.
The Premier and Super League 40-overs Rockaway finals were contested on Sunday at the Fairfield and Lusignan grounds respectively and Lusignan continued their good performances when their ‘A’ team defeated Buxton by 75 runs at Lusignan.
However, Fairfield, with a massive home crowd urging them on, spoiled the perfect weekend for Lusignan when they beat them in the Super League 40-over final.
In a game reduced to 27 overs at Lusignan, Lusignan ‘A’ galloped to 245 for 3 off 27 overs with Harrinarine Hera leading the way with eight fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 87, while Vishnu Ramjeet hammered eight sixes and fours fours in an explosive unbeaten 66 from just 18 balls and Deosarran chipped in with 53.
Rawle Fredericks had 2-51 off six overs and former National under-19 off-spinner and National football striker Clive Andries had 1-58 from five overs as the bowlers were under heavy fire.
Buxton in reply fell for 170 all out in 27 overs with Marlon Thomas (44), Fredericks (34) and R. Meusa (31) putting up some fight for the Buxton boys.
Chitram Gangadin (3-19 off 4 overs), Narvan Singh (3-30 off 6 overs) and Steve Ramdass (2-16 off 2.3 overs) did the damage for Lusignan ‘A’.
In the Super League 40-over Final, Fairfield made 196-8 in 35 overs with Richard Chaturia (77), Leslie Tulsiedas (31) and Shawn Hussain (20) contributing with the bat as Ganganand Sooknannd took 5-19 off seven overs.
The Lusignan Development side were then dismissed for 132 all out off 28.2 overs with Davananad Samaroo (23), Surijpaul Deosarran (22) and Sydhartur Anandjit (20) getting starts in a losing cause.
Mohan Bissoon had 5-24 off 6.3 overs and Richard Chaturia 3-29 off 7 overs did the damage with the ball.
