The University of Guyana (UG)’s Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) recently opened a branch at Charity, Region Two.
The Ministry of Education has disclosed that the facility on the Essequibo Coast houses a computer training centre and will be offering courses in Mathematics, English and other subject areas for adults and students who did not perform well at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
The Charity branch complements existing centres in New Amsterdam, Region Six and Georgetown.
UG Bursar Lloyd Seeram lauded the Region Two administration for its role in establishing the centre, noting that it will be of great benefit to Essequibians.
He said that the university is working to install telephone lines in the building so that the computer laboratory receives internet access. Seeram also noted that several back-up systems will be housed at the centre to ensure that there is no hold up or constraint in the delivery of information technology when any of the systems are down.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh said that apart from the courses in Mathematics, English and the other subjects, the new centre will play a vital role in making practically every resident on the Essequibo Coast computer literate.
This, he said is in keeping with the government’s vision for information technology, and dovetails the One Lap Top Per Family initiative which among other things is geared at bridging the digital divide.
With the centre now at its disposal, Baksh challenged the university to take education to another level by introducing e-learning programmes.
He stressed that in today’s world, technology is the way to go, and the establishment of the centre is a positive indication that the university is moving in this direction.
The occasion was attended by the university’s head of department for information technology, Raymond Khan, and former deputy vice chancellor Tota Mangar, who played a role in the establishment of the centre.
