One of Guyana’s longest serving Ministers of Home Affairs, Clement J. Rohee, was yesterday described as a man a great insistence with a profound sense of history, at the official launching of two more of his growing list of publications.
The official launching of two books by the Minister took place at the Police Officers’ Mess and was graced with the presence of some members of the diplomatic community and distinguished leaders of civil society.
The books are entitled ‘Securing Our Nation’, which is a compilation of speeches made by the Minister of Home Affairs since assuming office in 2006, and ‘Our Public Security Legislative Agenda’, which is made of up Bills, Motions and Debates by Rohee in the National Assembly.
Major General Retired, Norman McLean, who holds the distinction of serving under 17 Ministers of Home Affairs, delivered a brief review of ‘Securing Our Nation’, while Public Works and Transport Minister Robeson Benn presented an outline of ‘Our Public Security Legislative Agenda’.
In ‘Securing Our Nation’, which contains 63 of Rohee’s speeches in 270 pages, the Minister looked at mainly the Guyana Police Force and other related subjects.
According to Major General McLean, it is a vision for the future.
The other book ‘Our Public Security Legislative Agenda’ focuses on several important pieces of legislation that were tabled by Rohee, including the Firearm Amendment Bill and the Interception of Communications Bill, among others.
It also deals with Rohee’s presentation on the law regarding recorded evidence and the breathalyzer legislation.
In brief remarks, Police Commissioner Henry Greene expressed his admiration for the minister’s insistence and noted that the publications are testimonies of this. Greene credited Rohee for providing most of the enabling legislation that has been facilitating the effectiveness of the Guyana Police Force.
According to Greene, the books are two important pieces of documents for both study and research.
The Minister told the gathering that the timing of the books’ launching had nothing to do with the holding of elections in a month’s time. He said that the publications will enable persons to judge him by the contributions he has made to the development of Guyana.
Rohee has published other books such as ‘Guyana: A Bed of Thorns’, which was co-authored with the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan; ‘Facing The Challenges’; ‘Reform The European Union Sugar Regime’, ‘Guyana’s Foreign Policy-Towards The 21st Century’, and ‘Those Days’.
