A male pedal cyclist was killed at around 20:45 hrs last night after being struck by a policeman’s motor cycle near Twelfth Avenue in Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
The pedal cyclist, who is still to be identified, reportedly died on the spot, while the motorcyclist, identified as Constable Charles attached to the Brickdam Police Station, was taken to the East Bank Demerara Hospital for medical treatment. It is unclear who was at fault in the mishap.
The driver of a Canter truck said he observed the heavy traffic and upon investigating saw the pedal cyclist lying in the bushes near a bicycle, while the motorcycle was in the centre of the road.
The man recounted that with the assistance of passersby, the motionless man who was bleeding profusely was placed in the back of the Canter and taken to the East Bank Demerara Hospital. He was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.
