With an emphasis on ‘International Standards, creating confidence globally’ the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is celebrating National Quality Week. The week-long celebration started Monday and will conclude on Friday, which will be observed as World Standards Day. As such, a number of activities have been planned for the observances.
World Standards Day is a day set aside by the three main international standard bodies; the International Organization for Standardization, International Telecommunication Union and the International Electro-technical Commission, to recognize the contributions of thousands of persons working in the standardization field.
However, locally, the GNBS as part of its observance will be doing all it can to get the message across in keeping with the theme “International Standards, creating confidence globally”. Yesterday, the Bureau held a lecture for school children at the Pegasus Hotel.
The lecture was attended by students who were drawn from eight Secondary Schools around the city. During the forum the participants were given a PowerPoint presentation on the GNBS’ aims and objectives. That presentation was done by Public Relations Officer, Lloyd David.
Also, a presentation on International Standards and the roles of the International Organization for Standardization, International Telecommunication Union and the International Electro-technical Commission was done by Raymond Ramsaroop, Production Executive of Edward B. Beharry & Company Limited.
Meanwhile, throughout the week there will be other sensitization exercises aimed at businesses countrywide. There will also be a live call-in programme and panel discussion with various business entities who have already conformed to the respective standards of the GNBS.
World Standards Day was designated by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) which is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards.
ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. It is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.
