Boxing buffs, already a mite disappointed that woman bantamweight pugilist, Mandessa Moses would no longer
comprise a part of the card for the October edition of the monthly ProAm boxing extravaganza, will have to endure another bit of disappointing news following the withdrawal of Ray Sandiford for his proposed bout against Dominican based Clive Atwell. Rudolph Fraser is Atwell’s new opponent.
That bout was to have been the replacement for the six rounds bantamweight encounter between Moses and Venezuelan, Anys Cedillo after the latter pugilist opted out of the bout. Sandiford had initially signaled an eagerness to square off with Atwell but seemed to have had a change of heart.
Kaieteur Sport was informed that the unbeaten Sandiford had signaled to the organizers that he is no longer interested in the bout. He has cited insufficient preparation time as the reason. However, the source opined that Sandiford is experiencing cold feet and appears to be afraid of entering the ring against Atwell. The source further suggested that Sandiford has tasted Atwell’s hands when they fought thrice as amateurs with Sandiford being on the losing end. “He’s obviously trembling at the prospect of another beating,” opined our source.
However, Sandiford, a policeman by profession, scoffed at the suggestions and explained that with the impending general elections, he is now confined to barracks and hardly finds the time to train. I’m not afraid of Atwell and would fight him any day and anyplace,” he fumed. He said that he is looking forward to the match up as soon as he is released from stringent police work.
Meanwhile Fraser, Atwell’s new opponent, could not be reached for a comment but the lanky fighter who had surrendered his last bout to a Trinidadian in that country had stamped his authority in his last appearance of the ProAm card when he pounded out a lopsided four rounds decision over Barbados based Guyanese, Gardiel Roberts.
Sandiford had also chalked up a convincing win over Roberts in another edition of the ProAm cards, while Atwell has proven himself as a force to be reckoned with after defeating all and sundry in his division; the only blemish a drawn decision over Mark Austin.
Meanwhile, the other fights on the card are Pauline London against Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil for the latter fighter’s Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) Light/heavyweight belt, while Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy battles Barbadian Julian Taniff in a 4 rounds jnr/welterweight fight.
Mark Austin would be seeking redemption after his humiliating loss to Revlon Lake, when he squares off with Jermaine King in a welterweight six rounder. This is a return bout and Austin will have a point to prove after suffering a humiliating loss to Barbadian Miguel Antoine. King has pacified that loss somewhat when he held the Bajan to a draw last month. However, Austin had earlier dished out a licking over King who, after the Antoine fight has felt vindicated and has since vowed to avenge the loss to Austin. He now has his chance.
Iwan Azore and Troy Lewis will also go after each other in an 8 rounds middleweight affair, while Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman puts his local middleweight title on the line against Edmond DeClou.
There will be no amateur bouts on this card, while the admission price moves to $2,500 for the inner ringside and $1,500 for outer ringside.
