Women’s bantamweight pugilist Mandessa Moses was to have fought Venezuelan, Anys Cedillo
in a six round bout on a special boxing card dubbed ‘Thirst Park Explosion,’ slated for the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground on October 29 next. However, the hard hitting, rangy fighter continues to be dogged by ill luck after the Venezuelan opted out of the fight.
With insufficient time to find a suitable replacement, Moses has been relegated to the sidelines while Dominican based Guyanese pugilist, Clive Atwell has agreed to fill the slot in a 6 rounds featherweight affair against Ray Sandiford.
Boxing buffs could not have asked for a more suitable replacement as both boxers sport attractive records. Sandiford is still to lose and his recent victory over Barbadian based Guyanese Gardiel Roberts has placed him in the spotlight and justified his claim that he belongs among the big boys.
Atwell, on the other hand, is a classy pugilist and his only blemish to an otherwise impeccable record is a drawn verdict with Mark Austin. He has honed his skill in several Caricom countries and would obviously view himself as the more experienced boxer. Fight night will provide the answers.
Otherwise, several other bouts would comprise the card including the long awaited bout between former European champion and current local middleweight champion, Howard Eastman and Edmond DeClou for the local accolade while Pauline London, who has brashly called out Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil to put her WIBA heavyweight title on the line, will get her wish after O’Neil called her bluff.
Mark Austin would be seeking redemption after his humiliating loss to Revlon Lake, when he squares off with Jermaine King in a welterweight six rounder while knockout artist, Simeon Hardy will also appear on the card in a four rounder against Barbadian Julian Taniff moments before Iwan Azore and Troy Lewis go after each other in an 8 rounds middleweight affair. These two still nurture deep resentment for each other after their first bout ended in a brawl that forced the disciplinary committee of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) to mete out punishment to both pugilists.
The boxers are all engaged in diligent training sessions and Sunday morning last Hardy boxed 6 rounds at the Forgotten Youth
Foundation (FYF) boxing gym. Over at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Coach George Oprecht took Mark Austin through some tough drills including a session on the big truck tire which he was required to roll along Calendar Street. Oprecht explained that the exercise served to develop strong shoulder muscles while keeping his charge in shape for the tough assignment.
Meanwhile, the organizers have intimated that there will be no amateur bouts on this card while the admission price moves to $2,500 for the inner ringside while the outer ringside will be $1,500.
