Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ riding high and already on a historical path have won three World Cup qualifying games in a row, will be involved in yet another tough battle today when they take on home team Bermuda at the Bermuda National Sports Centre from 19:00hrs in their fourth World Cup Qualifying game today.
When the two teams met at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence on September 6, 2011, The Jaguars roared to a 2-1 with Trinidad and Tobago based forward Vurlon Mills netting the double.
Today’s match-up will not be an easy task as the home team will be coming out all guns blazing and will be full of confidence following their 2-1 win over Regional Powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago.
But the ‘Golden Jaguars’ will be up for the task and following their training session last evening at the game venue are a confident unit ready for the task at hand. The journey to date has been a challenging one for the Jaguars but they have overcome every hurdle so far.
Five of the players were bumped off the American Airlines flight on Sunday night after being told at the check in counter they would have received their boarding pass at the gate which they never did. Their luggage arrived in Bermuda with the rest of the team as it was disclosed that the flight was overbooked.
The five players were put up for the night and left for Bermuda last evening to join their other colleagues ahead of today’s match-up. The players affected were Charles Pollard, Richard Reynolds, Eusi Phillips and the Newton brothers, Jake and Howard.
First choice Captain Christopher Nurse will miss today’s game having been booked twice while Forward Gregory Richardson will also miss today’s game.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz commented: “This will be an uphill task made even more difficult with the absence of Nurse and Richardson. As Technicians we live for these moments and Allah is giving us an opportunity to meet adversity with courage and confidence. We want to do well for our people, our country and families. All we ask of you Guyana is to hold a strong vibe and send positive vibes to the team as well as pray for the team.”
Following today’s game, the Jaguars will return to their respective clubs ahead of their final two games in the group, a home and away tie against Trinidad and Tobago, November 11 at the Guyana National Stadium Providence and the return clash in the Twin Island Republic on the 15th.
