…forced sale of VCT 28-Vieira
Anthony Vieira, whose aired comments in relation to Bishop Juan Edghill spawned the four-month ban on CNS TV 6, yesterday appeared at A Partnership for National Unity’s Press briefing where he declared that there has been a systematic deprivation of opposition forces in Guyana.
When asked why he sold his television station to a friend of the President (Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop) as against an opposition colleague or consortium, Vieira told media operatives that at the time he was $80M in debt coupled with the fact that with the loss of the Lottery Draw airing on VCT 28, he was losing $1M a month.
He stated also that the loss of the right to air the Trinity Broadcasting Network’s programmes also caused another loss in revenue.
The former television station owner said that even further his advertisers were being threatened and harassed and were forced to withdraw advertisements causing him to lose even more revenue.
Vieira said that his then advertisers were being told that should they not withdraw their advertisements their imports would be subjected to ‘microscope’ searches at the Customs imports and that the Guyana Revenue Authority would be sent after them to further harass them.
“So I had to sell it and the best offer I had was from there (Bobby Ramroop),” Vieira said.
“The opposition has problems raising money to challenge the PPP in a legitimate way…We have sadly allowed it to happen and people who are supporters of the opposition have been systematically deprived.”
