Digicel (Guyana) presented six junior footballers with the opportunity to further develop their careers after giving them the chance to attend the ‘Kick Start’ training clinic in Suriname.
Yesterday during a simple ceremony which was held at the Company’s Head Office to introduce the young ballweavers, Public Relations Manager Shonnet Moore speaking with the media spoke of how excited they are to be able to provide the opportunity for the young players to participate in the clinic that runs from October 9-11.
The players, who were selected with the assistance of the Guyana Football Federation, are Jermaine Fletcher, Troy Lewis, Mark Wronge, Jason Cromwell, Romario Welcome and McCurd Cramer left yesterday afternoon for the neighbouring country.
The Clinic which will be conducted by former England and Liverpool legend John Barnes will se the successful participants assemble in Trinidad and Tobago for a week-long elite training camp from November 1-7 under the leadership of top Barclays Premier League coaches from the Sunderland Academy, assisted by Barnes.
The players selected to go through to the elite Digicel Academy will spend the week developing their skills and technical ability as well as learning valuable life skills such as personal discipline and commitment – all through positive reinforcement, fostering an appreciation of soccer’s intrinsic values.
Meanwhile, Cramer, who hails from the Waramadong community speaking with Kaieteur Sport, said that the entire community is behind him and very proud of his exploits so far and he will be going to Suriname with their full backing and hopes to do well.
Some of the players were chosen from the inaugural Digicel Schools Football Tournament and according to Moore it just shows the important role the competition served in exposing the skills from the hinterland community and all the other areas that hosted matches.
Also present yesterday was Digicel’s Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope.
