2011 ‘Ride for Life’ Tour of Guyana Road Race
Mark Lewis of Team Guyana led home a bunch of teammates en route to his Stage Three triumph as the 2011 ‘Ride for Life’ Tour of Guyana Road Race continued yesterday from Wales to Parika.
The little known Lewis, who resides in the bauxite town of Linden led home junior rider Raynauth Jeffrey, Team captain Robin Persaud, first stage winner Godfrey Pollydore, Team California rider Michael Larsen and another Guyanese Leer Nunes in that order.
It was a commanding performance from Team Guyana over the 35-mile event with Lewis finishing in a time of 58 minutes 58 seconds.
The local riders nearly swept the top six positions had it not been for Larsen, who edged out Nunes for fifth place.
Lewis’ performance, however, was not good enough to unseat Larsen’s teammate Jonathan Teeter as the overall leader of the tour.
The American Teeter, who is sponsored by Paso Prime Beef Company was second in the first stage, won the second stage in record time and also finished in the bunch who all received the same time of 59 minutes 38 seconds.
The race that commenced at 09:00hrs featured 36 starters who set off at a fairly steady clip with Albert Philander leading the breakaway and held a handy lead.
Philander was followed by a bunch of riders from Team California that included Adam Carr, Henner Rodel, Nicholas Sorensen, Larsen and Teeter, while Barbadian Jamal Eastman and Enzo Matthews were also in contention.
Matthews stepped up his pace and overtook Philander at Stanleytown, but soon after Teeter and Lewis blew past him as they approached the village of Nimes.
At Bagotville, a prime prize was up for grabs and Lewis stepped up his pace and grabbed it from Teeter.
The cyclist from the Mining Town opened up a lead for a brief period, but was caught at the Harbour Bridge by a small group of riders that included Persaud, Carr, Matthews, 17 year old Jeffrey and Cazala Christophe.
The pack stayed together, but was eventually joined by Team California.
Lewis looking quite relaxed captured the second prime prize up for grabs as he came out of nowhere to beat his rivals.
The race slowed for a period as the peleton caught the riders at the front until a group led by Marlon ‘Fishy ‘ Williams, Jeffrey, Pollydore, Persaud ,Paul DeNobreiga, Nunes, Eastman and Team California opened up a lead at Ruimzeight on the rest of the riders.
After that it was a frenetic burst for the finish and Lewis had enough in him to hold off his challengers for the win.
Stage Four is today from Charity to Supenaam, while the final stage is set to commence at Kara Kara on the Linden Highway and finish on Homestretch Avenue.
