On a good batting track on the small DCC ground yesterday, bowlers again felt the heat in Guyana’s second practice match for the Regional Super50 cricket tournament slated for Guyana from October 19-29.
Talented Essequibo left-hander Norman Fredericks and National selectee Trevon Griffith put together 124 for the first wicket in quick time and were especially severe on the fast but erratic former West Indies youth pacer Keon Joseph whose five overs cost 53 runs.
Fredericks smashed 12 fours and two sixes in an explosive 69-ball 81, while Griffith’s 66 lasted 56 balls and was decorated with six fours and two sixes before he was asked to retire as Royston Crandon’s X1 made 306-6 in 45 overs.
Shemroy Barrington then played an array of audacious shots in his 38-ball 52 with five fours and three sixes before Steven Jacobs was run out for a solid 57 from 67 balls with five fours and Shawn DeSouza finished unbeaten on 50 from 53 balls with seven fours as Royston Crandon’s X1 reached 261-8 in 45 overs in reply.
After Griffith was called in, Fredericks, a former National youth opener, was removed by left-arm seamer Andre Stoll at 183-1 before the experienced Test pair of Travis Dowlin (46) and Shiv Chanderpaul continued the batting dominance with Dowlin eventually being taken at long-on off spinner Leon Johnson at 221-3.
Chanderpaul, who departs later this month for the West Indies Test tour of Bangladesh, then swept Jacobs to backward Square-leg at 256-4, while Crandon rushed to 44 before being removed by National under-19 left-arm spinner Anthony Adams. Jacobs, who had 2-48 from 11 overs, bowled Vishaul Singh (11) at 304-6 just before the innings closed even as off-spinner Krishindat Ramoo, whose last over cost 16 runs, conceded 83 from his 12 overs.
When Fudadin’s X1 began their response, the Skipper fell to Kellon Carmichael for 14 at 26-1, while Johnson (2) was sent packing by national under-19 pacer Clinton Pestano at 31-2.
Barrington then lofted left-arm spinner Raj Nanan to long-on at 73-3 before Jonathon Foo (20) clipped Crandon to Chanderpaul to short mid wicket at 115-4.
Derwin Christian (13) was caught in the deep off teenaged leg-spinner Shawn Perreira before Jacobs was run out and Nanan, who bowled impressively to finish with 2-52 from 11 overs, bowled Perry.
Adams (2) was bowled by Carmichael (2-37 from six overs) before Frazer who hit a six in his unbeaten 11 and DeSouza remained to the end.
Off-spinner Latcha again bowled with control and gave away just 20 runs from his six overs.
The players will have a practice session from 14:00hrs at Bourda today before being given the day off tomorrow.
The next practice match is set for next week and Manager David Black said that preparations are going well. Black informed that Test opener Sewnarine Chattergoon who missed yesterday’s game due to a shin injury is expected to see a bone specialist today after being hit while fielding on the same shin which he suffered a hairline fracture.
Apart from some soreness due to their intense training schedule Black said all of the players are in high spirits with the out-of-town players and standbys being accommodated at the LBI hostel.
Black explained that the classy Ramnaresh Sarwan is continuing his rehabilitation work but will not be involved in any of the practice games before undergoing a fitness test next week Friday.
