‘Ride for Life’ Tour of Guyana Road Race
Up to press time Team California’s Jonathan Teeter was the likely leader after two completed stages of the ‘Ride for Life’ Tour of Guyana Road Race which begun yesterday in Berbice.
Teeter, who won the second stage from Barbados’ Jamal Eastman, seemed set to wear the yellow jersey ahead of Stage 3 which pedals off today from Wales Police Station and end at Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, while Stage 4 is from Charity to Supenaam on Saturday.
Teeter won yesterday’s Stage 2 from Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue in a record time of 2:18.45 which erased the old mark of 2:23.23 set by Guyanese Robin Persaud in 2009.
He came home ahead of 18 year-old Barbadian Eastman, while Nicholas Sorensen, Adam Carr, Michael Larsen and Henner Rodel finished off the top six positions.
In the first stage from Corriverton to New Amsterdam, Guyana’s Godfrey Pollydore won in a time of 1:36.05 which was better than the 1:38.38 posted last year by Antonio Quintero.
Pollydore was followed home by Teeter, Marlon Williams, Carr, Eastman and Michael Anthony in that order.
Some 60 cyclists faced the starter’s orders at the first stage, while 50 were allowed at the starting line for the second stage.
According to Race Officials, more riders are expected to face the axe after finishing past the 20 minutes allowance given after the winner goes over the finish line.
The third stage which is the shortest of the five stages will see riders fight to maintain or improve their positions in the time race which will be over 35 miles, before they head to the Essequibo Coast where they overnight before Stage 4.
Riders from the USA, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Denmark, Germany and England have descended on these shores to compete against the local contingent.
The race covers a total of 266 miles and the top ten riders will be awarded money and trophies.
Among those present to see the finish of the second stage included Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Permanent Secretary attached to the Ministry of Sport Alfred King, Dr. Shanti Singh of the National Aids Secretariat, President of the Guyana Cycling Federation Cheryl Thompson and National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed.
