Dear Editor,
Guyana will be participating in the Annual Inter Guyana Games sometime this month.
To my amazement I found out thru a source that Guyana will not be sending a female football team.
On enquiring I was told that the Director of Sports rejected the budget that was presented by an officer of the GFF saying that it was too expensive and costly.
I investigated and was told that the budget was in the vicinity of approximately $260,000 of which about $200,000 was for transportation for the females of Lethem.
Mr Editor, Guyana Female U20 and U17 Teams have qualified for the second round of games, the U20 will be playing in Guyana in early November and the U17 will also be playing sometime in November too. Remember they are representing Guyana.
The U17 won their group played here recently. If Sports and football in Guyana is to be developed then all must contribute.
If the Government cannot invest $300,000 in female sports then we are wasting time, let us shut shop and get out.
Mr Editor, I think that the Director of Sports has to become real and wake up to the realities of running a sports organisation. If it was some other sport with affiliation, trust me, they would have participated.
They are depriving the Female Players especially our Amerindian sisters who will be the biggest losers because 9 of them were slated to be a part of the team. Sometimes one wonders if the Ministry of Sports is serious about Sports.
Theresa
Editor’s note, I am not aware of the full details of this latest development, but will make enquiries from Director of Sport Neil Kumar as to the position of the female football involvement in the Inter Guiana Games.
