Leaders of Group B, Guyana’s Golden Jaguars, will be going after their third win in as many matches when they face hosts Barbados at their National Stadium from 16:00hrs today.
Guyana defeated their rivals from the Land of the Flying Fish at the Guyana National Stadium Providence when they met a few weeks ago and will be seeking to maintain their winning ways again today in a crucial game, their first on the road in this year’s qualifying.
The Jaguars arrived in Barbados on Wednesday afternoon and are in high spirits following a practice session yesterday afternoon at the National Sports Commission located in Blenheim.
Guyana’s chances of qualifying for the next round in the first instance would have been bolstered with the inclusion of the UK based duo of Leon Cort and Ricky Shakes, a defender and midfielder, respectively.
The Technical staff led by Technical Director, Jamaal ‘Captain’ Shabazz, is satisfied that the team have been improving with each game and while confident, they are not underestimating the opponents which they know will be hard to beat on home soil.
The Golden Jaguars outfitted in Roti Hut sponsored Polo Shirts pose for a photo just before departing for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri, on Wednesday.
It is understood that the Bajans which fielded a local side in their first game have included three overseas based players in an attempt to rescue their chances of qualifying from the group which also include Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.
Shabazz reminded that the theme going forward is “Keep focus as we strive forward with courage and confidence”.
The other game in Group B today will see T&T taking home team Bermuda. The Golden Jaguars’ second game on the road will be against Bermuda on Tuesday, while T&T will host Barbados the same day.
Forward Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, who will miss today’s game in Barbados, will join team for Tuesday’s match-up.
The final 11 which will be led by USA based Christopher Nurse will come from the following players: Dwain Jacobs, Jake Newton, Howard Newton, Leon Cort, Ricky Shakes, Walter Moore, Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Vurlon Mills, Ronson Williams (GK), Richard Reynolds (GK), Anthony Abrams, Travis Grant, Alinani Mounter, Shawn Beveney, Anthony Benfield, Eusi Phillips and Kayode McKinnon.
The team was last evening treated to dinner at the Roti Hut Plus which is part of the Roti Hut Food Chain.
