Inter-zone/Inter-school Field Events Championships
The Bishops High School U-18 Javelin thrower, Lorenzo Bethune, lit up the Guyana’s Teachers Union ground yesterday to set the guideline for the remaining throwers in the event.
Bethune’s 36m of which none of his opponents and other throwers was able to achieve was rewarded first place as Marians Academy’s Michael Whitehead 31.26m was second.
Kimberly Arthur from Bishops High School was also a trend-setter for the female category. Arthur’s 21.98m destroyed all comers including the winners of boys U-12 (Keith Kurt: 18.84m) and U-14 (Jamal Sampson: 19.93m) category.
Trevor D’Oliviera 31.90m topped Derick Rose 29.79m in the U-16 boys as Joel Yaw and Harold Moore, the bother of the former North Zone National athlete, Hilton Moore, secured the two top positions in the Open category for the Government Technical Institute with throws of 35.44m and 34.50m respectively.
Faith Jarvis won the Open girls with 12.6m as Ashanita Tulsi was first with 7.24m and Courtney Merriman second with 5.45m in the girls U-12 Javelin.
Athene Foo and Rasheeda Richardson were competing against each other as if it was a neck to neck 100m race; however Foo proved she was the better woman after registering 12.19m in the U-18 girls Javelin as Richardson (12.17m) was edged out by 2cm.
Queens College did a clean sweep in the U-14 category, with the girls taking the first and second position with throws of 20.58m and 16.10m. Kevin Williams leaped a distance of 6m as Neil Gordon of Chase Academy did at his Inter-zones/ Inter-schools on Wednesday. However, Williams 6.25m jump bettered Gordon’s 6.02m leap in the open boy’s category.
The girls Open category saw last year’s Inter-Guiana Games distance athlete, Tisha Grimes leaping to a distance of 4.37m to achieve the runner-up position to Keisha Fords’ 4.40m.
Steve Gibson (U-18) and national athlete, Daniel Haynes (U-16) were victorious in their jumps as well. Gibson registered 5.94m to claim his category as Haynes cataloged 5.11m to win the U-16 boys.
National North Zone athlete, Shaquan Daniels lost her jumps to Bishops’ High School jumper, Onika Rose; who captured the first position with 4.05m. Shaquan’s twin, Shomaine Daniels demonstrated to her sister the correct way to decimate her opponents in the jumps. Shomaine Daniels did it with 4.27m to win the girls U-18 long jump.
Michael Morrison and Makeba Ifill did the honours in the boys and girls U-14 long jump with leaps of 4.67m and 4.50m; the U-12 category saw Andre Somrah 4.77m and Serena Grandison 3.52m jumps conquering their opponents.
Jermain Gordon’s 10.21m throw in the Open boys Shot Putt was rewarded with first as Haynes 9.06m won the U-16 boys. James Osborne’s 4.55m claimed the U-12 boys group as Queen’s Walter Roberts 9.59m won the U-18 boys ahead of national athlete Kareem Naughton.
The female group saw the under 14, 16, 18 and open throwers winning their events above the 5m mark.
Javanna Langford returned to achieve consecutive victories in the Discus Open girls event after decimating her rivals in the iron ball throw. Gordon was also able to capture another victory with 33.13m. Arthur’s 21.90m and Shawn Joris’ 23.03m topped the under 16 category of the throws.
