In Regional Super 50 build-up
After not being selected for this month’s Regional Super 50 cricket tournament in Guyana for missing the mandatory fitness test, former West Indies left-hander Narsingh Deonarine hit an accomplished unbeaten 70 at Bourda yesterday in the first practice match for the Guyana team.
The 28-year-old Deonarine, who has played eight Tests and 20 ODIs, stroked eight fours and a six in his 81-ball innings and got support from the in-form Steven Jacobs whose undefeated 50 came from 51 balls and was decorated with four fours as Sewnarine Chattergoon’X1 beat Assad Fudadin’s X1 by eight wickets in a match reduced to 31 overs due to overnight rain.
Chattergoon’s X1 reached 166-2 off 30.2 overs replying to the 162-6 in 31 overs made by Fudadin’s X1.
Deonarine and 23-year-old Jacobs joined forces at 72-2 when off-spinner Steven Latcha, who bowled impressively and displayed excellent control, had National under-19 batsman Chanderpaul Hemraj (29) caught behind and the pair delighted the small crowd with entertaining batting on a slow track.
Guyana under-19 pacer Clinton Pestano had stalled the run-chase in the first over when he bowled Norman Fredericks for a duck with just a run on the board.
When play eventually began after Lunch, Trevon Griffith (15) and Fudadin, who scored a 49-ball fifty with three fours and two sixes, put on 39 for the first wicket before the left-handed Griffith edged an off-break from Jacobs to Chattergoon at slip.
Fudadin, who smashed Jacobs for a four and a six off his first two balls, was asked to retire out before Leon Johnson, who timed the ball beautifully in his 69-ball 48 with two fours and two sixes, further entertained the gathering and was eventually bowled by Kellon Carmichael (2-24) who had also bowled Shiv Chanderpaul (7) in his first over.
After Royston Crandon (6) fell to teenaged leg-spinner Shawn Pereira, Vishaul Singh hit a busy unbeaten 18 and Pestano was stumped off the final ball of the innings to provide Pereira with his second wicket.
Chattergoon was forced to leave the field after being hit on the same right shin which he had sustained a hairline fracture and should miss today’s second practice match at DCC from 09:00hrs.
