Two American women failed to make it past the security checkpoint at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri with an undisclosed amount of cocaine intended for the United States of America, yesterday.
The women were about to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to New York when they were busted by members of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and ranks from the Police Narcotics Branch.
The cocaine was stashed in the soles of shoes that were in the suitcases the women were carrying.
Kaieteur News understands that the women who were together were checking in their luggage when the drug agents saw them acting suspiciously and pulled them aside for a search.
“These people who packed this cocaine are real pros. It was a neat job,” said a source.
The women who cried bitterly claimed ignorance of the drug, telling investigators that, other persons had given them the shoes to take to New York.
According to information received by this newspaper, the women, who said that they are unemployed, arrived in Guyana a week ago and were staying at a Georgetown location.
Investigators are convinced that they were recruited as mules by drug dealers, since they have no family or other close ties to Guyana.
They are expected to appear in court soon.
