Romain Bacchus and her husband, Lawrence Sooknanan are $1.2 million poorer after some men broke into their parked vehicle.
Bacchus said that they had traveled from their New Amsterdam business place—Triple F Battery Service and Auto Spares and Taxi Service—to buy spares in the city.
The woman explained that her operation is small and she cannot buy large quantities of motor spares so she is often required to travel to the city.
She said that on Tuesday, while in the city, she stopped at Fullworth’s on Regent Street where some men were emptying a container of spares. She said that she wanted a front end for a Toyota car.
Two bags, one of which contained the cash, were left hidden in the vehicle, a Toyota Tundra. The woman said that no one from outside the vehicle could have seen the bags because they were on the floor tucked away.
When she returned to the vehicle she noticed that the lock to the front door was tampered but whoever did failed to enter the vehicle. That person then resorted to forcing the doors open but again that failed to permit entry to the vehicle.
The persons eventually smashed the window and with help, slid into the vehicle and removed the bags.
Ms Bacchus said that she was aware that people should not leave money in parked vehicles but she said that since she did not intend to tarry in Fullworth’s she took a chance.
The police lifted prints from the vehicle and in the proceeds found that one of the prints was from a grease-covered finger, leading her to believe that one of the people emptying the container may have participated in the break-in.
The woman said that she had to borrow money to get home. She did not have enough to pay the toll.
