Forty-year-old Oma Devi Persaud (Nadie), of 59 Annandale West, East Coast Demerara is now battling for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) after she was hit and flung into the air by a white car, PNN7567. The accident occurred at about 10:00am last Monday.
The vehicle and its driver are now in police custody.
On Tuesday she was admitted to the Incentive Care Unit (ICU) at the GPHC in a critical state. She sustained a broken leg and hand, and injuries to the head.
Yesterday relatives were told that they could not see the patient who had to undergo surgery today.
Vijay Persaud, the victim’s brother stated that his sister was waiting for a bus at Annandale west, “under the concrete bridge” to go to Georgetown, when the racing “212” overtake another 212 and a truck at once, then “literally” picked up Devi from the corner, “flung her in the air” and “pitched” her in a nearby drain.
The grieving brother said he is grateful that his sister did not land on the road. “If that was the case then she would have been long gone,” says Vijay.
The brother added that he made a report at the Vigilance Police Station and was told by the police, “We heard about the accident but we have no trace”.
Vijay said that he then made it his duty to “go out” and get the car number from eyewitnesses and went back at the station the same day with the information.
At the station on Tuesday Vijay was told by another police officer, “The sergeant handling the case is in Essequibo”.
